After owning and operating a successful tire business in Henderson, NC, brothers Phillip and Curtis White had a vision. They realized folks in the Raleigh, NC area — especially those with credit challenges — needed a way to get affordable, pre-owned vehicles with financing to pay for them. At the time, there weren’t many dealerships offering this type of service.
In March 1989, the White brothers opened AutoMax and started offering on-the-lot financing for the reliable used vehicles they sold to residents of Raleigh, NC, and the areas surrounding Henderson, NC.
You can still find us in the same building in Henderson, but we’ve added a second used car dealership in Youngsville, and most recently a third used car dealership in Wilson, to better serve customers all over central North Carolina, including Wake, Durham, Orange, Franklin, Vance, Granville, Person, Nash, Johnston, Warren, Edgecombe, Wilson and Halifax counties.
Despite our growth, our core values haven’t changed, and we’re still a family-owned-and-operated business, run by the second generation of the White family, Mike, Allen and Jeff.

At AutoMax, our mission is to make it easy for North Carolina residents in the Raleigh, Durham, and Wilson, NC areas to buy reliable vehicles, with in-house financing and complementary warranties. We provide buy here pay here car loans for people who are unable to qualify for a conventional car loan and help them overcome their credit challenges.

When AutoMax first opened, the term “buy here pay here” was still unfamiliar to car buyers. The concept of purchasing a car through dealership-funded loans was new, and dealerships who operated this way used terms like “in-house financing” or “tote the note.”
Today, we use the term “buy here pay here.” For some people, that important phrase is the difference between owning a reliable car and having to walk or rely on buses or friends to get you to work, school, church, and the store.
